"We proudly support the Open Source AI License as it sets much-needed standards for transparency and accountability in open-source AI. For too long, the term 'open source' in AI has been used loosely, often without the clarity and transparency that traditional open-source software provides. "This is a much-needed definition. The industry has been loosely using the term "open source" to refer to machine learning models that are somewhat available to the general public, even though the benefits associated with the "open source software" concept are often absent in these models; this can potentially lead to confusion, misuse, and legal trouble.
Having a precise baseline to classify models according to the same principles as open source software ensures users and businesses can understand how to choose, use, and benefit from the technology without having to worry about the fine print."

"The Open Source and Free Software ecosystem is a dynamic community of diverse organizations and individuals constantly innovating and improving, and, as such, has wholeheartedly embraced the artificial intelligence (AI) movement with all its potential for good, imprecisions and ethical misgivings, just as it has done with all previous technological advances.
Given the indefiniteness and abuse surrounding Ai, it was therefore necessary to reach a clear and concise agreement on the meaning of Open Source in the context of Ai.
The community is very grateful to the Open Source Initiative for starting the discussion and helping create a consensus around this definition.

Ontario Council of University Libraries
"The Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) is pleased to signal its appreciation and support for the Open Source Initiative's (OSI) Open Source AI Definition. The result of meaningful consultation and collaboration, the definition is informed by the vision of ensuring that the benefits of AI development and usage extend to the greatest possible diversity and breadth of impacted communities. The definition offers guidance to those creating and sustaining AI systems about what it takes to demonstrate that the assertion of openness is accompanied by identifiable attributes, like the granting of freedom to use the system, study how it works, and modify and share it. Because the definition offers baseline requirements of an open AI system, the definition is equally valuable to those evaluating AI systems for potential adoption, as OCUL is in fact doing.
Libraries', and OCUL's, commitment to open systems more generally is undisputed and has resulted in growing, sustaining, and responsibly stewarding access to scholarly publication (scholaris.ca) and research data (borealisdata.ca), as just two examples. That sector-wide focus on advancing the value of openness applies even more urgently in the AI age as information seekers increasingly depend on the outputs of AI systems that represent themselves as valuable to the research enterprise. To be sure, such assertions on the part of AI systems and their proponents require critical consideration. The Open Source AI definition clearly articulates the value of promoting open source models, not the least of which is ensuring the broadest possible engagement and transparency in the development of tools that have profound and widespread impacts on information seeking and discovery and knowledge creation and sharing."

"This effort you and OSI team have been driving is really important and I’m a believer that time is becoming of the essence. Inevitably it will need to evolve but putting a stamp on it soon is important. "I endorse! We need common vocabulary to define what is open is what isn't. This is a solid framework that doesn't give a blank check to those who are lightly claiming to be providing open source AI (even if they desperately wish to be qualified as such), and reversely, the framework is open to initiatives that introduce gradients of open source on the various components that make an AI system, and recognizes efforts in opening-up all or some of the components. After all, "AI" is a derivative of software, complete with data, code and artefacts. There is no reason a derivative system should be classified under the foundational definition of "open source" and at the same time, AI systems are becoming so powerful at capturing intelligence away from humans that we need to qualify their degree of openness. Hats off to all involved for producing such an important piece of work."
